INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE

The MCD process has demonstrated its effectiveness and adaptability by destroying a range of contaminants on a large-scale. Initial pilot and full-scale trials focused on using MCD to degrade organic contaminants in soil, with recent trials investigating asbestos destruction in cementitious materials.

Bien Hoa, Vietnam

In a project commissioned by the Global Environmental Facility and the United Nations Development Programme, EDL carried out a full-scale soil decontamination demonstration at a former US airbase in Vietnam.

The trial successfully treated 150 tonnes of soil contaminated with Poly-Chlorinated Dibenzo-p-Dioxins and Dioxin-like Poly-Chlorinated Biphenyls; which are known to be amongst the most recalcitrant and toxic anthropogenic chemicals.

Mapua, New Zealand

In collaboration with the New Zealand Ministry for the Environment and Tasman District Council, EDL undertook its largest project to date at the Fruitgrowers Chemical Company site in Mapua. 8,650 m3 of soil heavily contaminated with Lindane, DDT, Dieldrin, and Aldrin was treated at what was known as country’s most contaminated site.

All soil was successfully remediated to levels below soil guideline values, with 60% of the land currently used for residential purposes and 40% used for recreational grounds.
